BC: Meet Ken "Aeroplan Points" Cretney

Author: Jordan Bateman 2013/05/23

Part 4 in a 11-part blog series looking at questionable expenses of several government employees, as revealed by CTF Freedom of Information requests.

Vancouver Convention Centre manager Ken Cretney made $330,351 in 2011/12, and expensed another $54,071. Unbelievably, that only made him the 138th highest paid government employee in B.C. Still, $54,071 in expenses is equal to the average household income in Penticton.

As you’ll see from his expense report, Cretney charges taxpayers for a lot of gas and parking.

In February 2012, he spent 1,348.04 to fly to Chicago (p. 2).

In September, taxpayers paid $1,682.15 to send him to Orlando (p. 8). Also that month, he charged taxpayers $5,112.11 to send him to Leipzig, Germany for a convention (p. 12).

That wasn’t his only trip to Orlando last year. He also went in July and charged taxpayers $2,361.91 for his tickets and various fare changes (p. 16).

He did a Hong Kong/Singapore/Kuala Lumpur trip in April, but no airfare cost was disclosed to us (p. 35-36).

He also expensed a $179.20 gift basket to commemorate the opening of B.C. Place Stadium (p. 6). Fair to assume that this gift did not go to Bob Mackin.

In August, taxpayers paid $1,900 for he and three other staffers to play in the Tourism Industry Partners golf tournament in Whistler. We also shelled out $1,915.20 for he and a staffer to play in the B.C. Hospitality Foundation golf tourney (p. 14).

Did we miss anything? Leave us a comment with your thoughts on Cretney’s expenses.
