BC: Chilliwack Wastes Money on Signs

Author: Jordan Bateman 2014/03/07

A tip of my hat to former Chilliwack Mayor John Les, who flagged this story on his Facebook page: Chilliwack council has approved $190,000 for four ‘Welcome to Chilliwack’ signs on Highway 1. The rationale was pure bureaucratic bafflegab:

“The Trans-Canada Highway bisects the City of Chilliwack and is a major connector between the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley and the Interior of B.C. The Chilliwack Entry Sign Project will provide signage along this connector that will greet visitors, investors and residents and help to form their impressions of our community.”

John’s response: “I’m not impressed. Why not decrease taxes by $190K instead?” Hear, hear!

John Les was the mayor who put up the billboard on Highway 1 with the famous tagline: “Chilliwack – Where Business Grows. Phone the mayor 604-793-2900.” While those billboards could use a fresh look, it would certainly be cheaper to spruce them up than to go with these $190,000 monuments to nothing.
