BC: Bennett and Ashton to Head Up Cost Cutting Review

Author: Jordan Bateman 2013/06/10

Buried in Friday’s B.C. cabinet announcement was a very important naming: Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett was also given responsibility for a core services review. Assisting Bennett as parliamentary secretary is Dan Ashton, the outgoing mayor of Penticton.

In our Budget 2012-13 submission, the CTF called for another core review to reassess government’s roles and responsibilities after 12 years of B.C. Liberal leadership.

Such a review asks three simple questions:

  • What is government’s business?
  • How are we going to do it?
  • How can we do it better?

Bennett is a straight-shooting, git-’er-done kind of guy, so he’s a perfect fit. And Ashton, as mayor of Penticton, just led his community through a core review which resulted in a three year property tax freeze, staffing reductions, better bargaining results with CUPE, and other savings most mayors claim are “impossible.”

Go Bill and Dan! B.C.'s cash-strapped taxpayers are cheering for both of you!
