WINNIPEG: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) called on politicians in Manitoba today to consider a successful 'green' initiative from the City of Ottawa that is good for both the environment and taxpayers.
"Politicians are always looking for green initiatives to announce, but their plans usually end up costing taxpayers a lot of money," said CTF Manitoba Director Colin Craig. "The idea we're highlighting comes from the City of Ottawa and could help Manitoba's environment without costing taxpayers a cent."
Twice a year, the City of Ottawa proclaims "Give Away Weekends." During both weekends, citizens are encouraged to place any unwanted goods - that still have life in them - at the curb instead of throwing them out. Citizens then place a "free" sign on the items and allow others to come and take any goods they might want.
"A couple years ago a journalist in Ottawa documented how she had furnished an apartment with products picked up on give away weekend," added Craig. "Not only do give away weekends help keep useful products out of landfills, they can give a hand up to those that can't afford to buy new products."
The CTF raised the initiative with Mayor Katz in February and is pleased the idea is now being studied by the City's Environmental Committee. Other municipalities as well as the provincial government are encouraged to keep this cost-free 'green' option in mind.
Craig noted that Ottawa's giveaway weekend cost approximately $23,000 last year for advertising costs, but was optimistic media participation in Manitoba could make the activity a success without using any tax dollars.
