SK: Prairie Valley School Division's Puzzling Motions

Why did the board accept its Director of Education’s resignation in one motion, then hire him back in the following motion for the same pay and position?

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) called on the Chair of the Prairie Valley School Division today to explain why the board accepted their Director of Education’s resignation in one motion and then rehired the individual back for the same pay and duties in the following motion.

Minutes from the board’s May 11, 2011 meeting show the cryptic back to back motions. The CTF confirmed with the board’s Director of Education, that he was the individual in question and that his pay and position did not change.

The Director of Education would not indicate if he planned to draw on his pension from the Saskatchewan Teachers Superannuition Plan. The plan currently has a $4 billion unfunded liability which is fully backstopped by taxpayers.

“Why would the board do this?” asked CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig. “If the move was done to allow the individual to start drawing on his pension, the board should be up front about that.”

“We hope the board will disclose their legal opinions on the matter as well as their letter of request to the province which sought an exemption from the requirement to advertise the position,” added Craig.

From the inside

Yes senior admins receive bonuses.

Difference between two teacher plans

TSC is the old fund and teachers that started employment after 1981 are NOT on this plan and their is no liability for the new fund to the gov't or taxpayers. Yes, the gov't is on the hook for the old plan, but these folks are 95% retired already and that was the deal the gov't offered at the time to many groups, not just teachers. Interesting that Colin Craig and Gormley have painted all teachers with the same brush. Teachers on STRP or the new plan are completely responsible for funding their own pension.

Not really so puzzling

It really isn't that puzzling is it, considering that there was no change in salary or position (according to the story). So what purpose would this transaction serve? My guess would be..... a technical purpose. Maybe he was hired back on a different kind of contract. Maybe the contract  he was on did not comply with the technical requirements to collect pension at the same time. Is there a was for anyone to find out?

Hey, while we're asking questions here does anyone know if senior administration receives incentive bonuses in addition to their salaries?

Puzzling motion

It really isn't that puzzling is it? If there was no change in salary or title? It is also interesting that this came about during teacher negotiations. One question I have - Is the Senior Administration also receiving incentive bonuses and to what dollar amount if they are?

Pension and salary

Double-dipping goes on all the time in Ottawa. I love the military, and fully support all who are at the sharp end (I'm wearing red today), but DNDHQ is crawling with "retired" former soldiers drawing pensions and on contract in their former jobs. I personally know two (husband/colonel and wife/corporal). Four salaries. No mortgage. Must be sweet.
