The National Debt Clock Tour began February 22nd at Mile 0 of the TransCanada Highway in Victoria, British Columbia and ended March 26th in Lunenburg Nova Scotia just as the most recent federal election campaign was getting underway.

Over the 33 day tour, the federal debt climbed $3,661,643,836 – a pace of $1,284 per second!

The tour covered 9 provinces and stopped in 71 communities along the 10,000-kilometer route. We only regret that we could not have made more stops.

Thanks to all of you who came out to see the clock – supporters, media, public at large – to take a photo, meet our staff, sign a petition. Many of you also downloaded our debt clock widget, blogged, Facebooked, Tweeted and forwarded e-mails and videos promoting the campaign to end runaway deficit spending.

And an even bigger thanks to all of you who donated to make this campaign possible especially the 156 who generously sponsored name plates on the clock along with our three major sponsors PWM Steel in Lloydminster, Ventures West Transport in Fort Saskatchewan and Myshak Sales and Rentals in Edmonton.

The last time we toured the clock in the mid-90s we helped put an end to 27 consecutive deficit budgets. Nearly one-third of our tax dollars were going to debt interest. Thirteen years later we are bound and determined to not let history repeat itself, federally or in the provinces.

On April 8th Prime Minister Harper made the commitment that a re-elected a Conservative government would balance the federal budget in 2014 – a full year ahead of schedule. Importantly, that policy would be achieved through spending reductions and no increase in taxes.

It’s now our job to see that commitment through.

Those who were not able to catch the clock on the tour can check out photos and videos from the tour, as well as an inter-active map with stories from the road at www.debtclocktour.ca. Canadians can also watch the rapidly growing debt on the on-line version of the debt clock anytime at www.debtclock.ca.

The large aluminum clock which measures 6 feet high and 12 feet long, displayed federal debt growing in real-time as well as the per person calculation. A customized trailer was built for the tour which allowed for a rolling display of the clock.
