Citizens' Assembly on MLA pay

Alberta MLAs have given themselves substantial raises in recent years, always at the expense of taxpayers. Alberta politicians earn substantially more than their counterparts in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

MLAs make $78,138 annually, though $26,046 is earned tax-free. Cabinet ministers with portfolios make an additional $63,912 each year, and the premier makes an additional $81,312. In addition, most MLAs are given additional monthly allowances because of varied responsibilities.

The problem is that elected officials are setting their own salaries instead of allowing an independent process decide what their pay should be. The CTF wants a citizens' assembly to be formed to decide what MLA pay should be.
