To prime minister and opposition leaders:
Taxpayers contribute $23.30 for each $1 that MPs will contribute to their pension accounts. These gold-plated pensions ensure that after only six years, MPs are eligible for a minimum $35,000 pension, per year, for life, starting when they turn 55. Many will receive much, much more.
Incredibly, taxpayers are kicking in over $248,000 each year into each MP’s pension account – more than we pay our MPs ($157,000 base pay) and way, way more than the minimum $10,990 that MPs are putting into their own accounts.
Federal spending needs to be cut in order to balance the federal budget. This includes the pay, benefits and pensions of government workers. However, until lawmakers themselves bring their own pensions in line, they will not have the moral authority to move forward.
We the undersigned call upon you to shut down the current MP pension plan, create an optional dollar-for-dollar matching Pooled Registered Pension Plan (PRPP) for MPs and introduce a “Lavigne” rule to take away the taxpayer-paid benefits from any MP who is convicted of a crime relating to their public office.
Canada's Federal Debt
Your Share
The federal government is adding $88 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out this year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.
