FED: Unicorn Sighting: Politicians tighten their own belts
Unicorn Sighting - Government tightening its own belt
· Adopts Taxpayers Federation’s recommendations on spending restraint
TORONTO: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) responded to the Speech From the Throne applauding the government for adopting measures to restrict some areas of government spending starting with freezing MP and cabinet pay.
CTF Federal Director, Kevin Gaudet, said “it’s good to see politicians leading by example because it’s so rare. This gives them the moral authority to make the serious spending reductions that will be necessary to balance the budget.”
The Throne Speech announced measures that adopt some key CTF recommendations from our pre-budget submission, including:
- freezing pay for the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, MPs and Senators;
- freezing Ministers’ office budgets, calling for the same from MPs; and,
- freezing departmental operating budgets (salaries, administration and overhead).
Gaudet concluded, “fiscal restraint starts at home. It is good to see that the government recognizes that economic challenges should not be limited to those who aren’t elected MPs.”

The federal government is adding $88 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out this year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.

SPENDING FREEZE ON MP'S DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH
1. HOW ABOUT LOWERING ALL GOVERNMENT SALARIES AND EXPENDITURES BY 15% OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, AND REDUCE THE OVERALL SIZE OF GOVERNMENT BY 20% OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS.
2. CANCEL ALL PROVINCIAL TRANSFER PAYMENTS, AND APPLY 80% OF THE TRANSFERS TO FEDERAL DEBT REDUCTION, AND THE REMAINING 20% TO PROVINCIAL DEBT REDUCTION.
3. ELIMINATE ALL FEDERAL TAXATION, INCLUDING PAYROLL AND INCOME TAX. AND REPLACE OUR OLD TAX SYSTEM WITH A " SINGLE FAIR CONSUMER BASED TAX"
THAT'S WHAT NEEDED IN THIS COUNTRY I'VE RESIDE IN OVER THE PAST 51 YEARS. WHEN OUR CANADIAN POLITIANS AND POLITICAL PARTY SYSTEM START TALKING LIKE THIS COMMONSENSE AND SMART, I'LL START VOTING AGAIN.
I'VE VOTED CONSERVATIVE SINCE I WAS 18 YEARS OLD, AND I'M A BUSINESSMAN. I QUIT VOTING IN 2008.
