CTF shoots down tax hike suggestions

Picture of Debt Clock on CTV

Above, Liberal MP Gerard Kennedy suggests tax hikes would be well-received by Canadians, but Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says a recession is when Canadians can least afford tax increases. Conservative MP John Baird says tax increases are not on the agenda. The Debt Clock, now showing numbers past a half trillion, is featured in a CTV report.

Below, CTF Federal director Kevin Gaudet says tax increases are far from necessary and that it's time government finally found ways to reduce spending. He debates the issue on Business News Network with a former TD bank economist.

Canada not corrupt?

1. Taxes on airline travel are out-of-this-world. Since when has every imaginary tax been added to such "entertainment" - travel, that is? People south of the international border wouldn't stand for it. The difference in tax cost between a ticket out of Canada to a US point, and one from the same point back to departure airport bought separately in the US shows an extremely large variable.

WHY SHOULD WE AS CANADIANS ALLOW THAT?

Some friends in the travel industry have suggested that THE AIRLINES set the various taxes and that the revenues stay in AIRLINES' coffers.

2. Why should automobiles be so much more expensive in Canada than in the USA? What other collusion/corruption does this show?

3. Politicians and civil servants must begin thinking of Canadian taxpayers when they make their policies. No reason why limits should be put on the number of patients a physician can see, forcing the public into the hands of private agencies. SHADES OF TOMMY DOUGLAS!! Canadians, therefore, are paying TWICE for the same service.

4. Citizen committees must oversee the remuneration politicoes and civil servants receive. Allowing of these "to the purple born" to write their own salary cheques is absolutely iniquitous.

5. NL premier Williams has gone to the US for treatment. Is he another one of the super-elite who imply "Pas pour moi, Josephine? What's good for you ain't for moi!"

Canada's Federal Debt

Your Share

The federal government is adding $153 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out next year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.
