To Andrew Scheer, Chair of the House of Commons Board of Internal Economy, and David Tkachuk, Chair of the Senate Internal Economy Committee:

MPs and Senators should be transparent and accountable to taxpayers with how they spend taxpayers’ money.  As has been demonstrated with MP and MLA spending scandals in the UK, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, taxpayers have good reason to want to see how those dollars are spent. The current practice of simply reporting expenditure totals by category is a small first step.  But it is not sufficient; nor is internal practices of self-administered vetting, auditing or expense “guidelines” acceptable.  The City of Toronto has commendably posted the receipts of their elected officials’ expenses on-line.

We the undersigned call on the House of Commons and the Senate to follow the City of Toronto’s lead and place all MPs and Senators’ expenses on-line.

Canada's Federal Debt

The federal government is adding $88 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out this year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.
