Campaign: Debt Free Sask

Debt Free Sask

With resource revenues pouring in, now is the time to pay off the provincial debt.

After all, once the debt is paid off, the Saskatchewan government will save more than $400 million in annual interest charges. It's similar to paying off your credit card and not having the monthly payment.

$400 million is almost enough to completely eliminate school taxes or reduce the PST from 5% to 3%. Even better, paying off the debt will mean that young people won't be stuck with the bills for previous generations.

Fortunately, a debt free Saskatchewan is a definite possibility – we just need the government to make it a priority.

Consider that in 2001-02 resource revenues were $903 million. Yet for 2011-12 they came in at $2.82 Billion – 212% higher. In fact, just before the recent recession, resource revenues hit $4.6 billion in 2008-09.

Premier Wall has set a goal of paying off another $400 million by 2017, but we all know, governments can get sidetracked. Please sign our petition to drive home the point that paying off the province's $3.8 billion debt should be a priority and the provincial government should try and exceed that target.
