Has BC Ferries failed?

Canadian Taxpayers Federation BC Director Jordan Bateman asked outgoing BC Ferries CAO David Hahn if the transition of the corporation from people-mover to boutique tourist operation was a failure. Hahn, naturally, disagreed, but his comment that a higher percentage of present ferry riders are tourists is only true due to the collapse of local ridership from sky-high ferry fares.

financial sustainability of BCFerries

BCFerries is not failing financially because it is badly run. Routes serving ferry dependent communities are our highways. Therefore the provincial government has to finance ferry routes in the same way as they do provincial highways. New ships, mid life upgrades of ships and terminals have to be paid for in a similar manner as the ministry of transportation does. Upkeep and maintenance for roads out of fuel tax and motor licencing fees, new construction, major improvements taxpayer funded.
