Who Doesn't Want the East Side Line?

Some suggest that the new Hydro line (Bipole III) can't be built along the east side of the province as the reserves there don't want it.

So why on earth would an organization representing many of those reserves (Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakinak) put out this news release in 2007? Not only does it question the claim band members don't want the line, it calls for a referendum.

Check out these gems from the release:

"We urge the government to reconsider their west side transmission line announcement. MKO is developing a transmission line route as requested by the MKO Chiefs of the east side that would satisfy all people and governments concerned about disruption of the boreal forest and the united nations heritage park site."

"We believe the west side transmission line is not power smart or energy efficient. We believe there is lost energy in perpetuity which will cost millions to the taxpayer of Manitoba."

"MKO will also be proposing an east side route that will not hamper the United Nations Heritage Site located in Poplar River First Nation territory"
