It’s Time to End Halifax's Public Transit Strike
Feb 7th
Dear Mayor Kelly,
I am writing to you today to ask you to take action to end this public transit strike.
As the strike enters its second week, it’s clear that unless action is taken, this strike could potentially last for several more weeks. The strike creates a significant impediment to thousands of people who rely on our public transit system each and every day to get to their jobs or carry out their daily responsibilities.
There is a solution.
Our organization asks that as soon as possible a motion be made at city council calling on the Nova Scotia Government to recall the legislature and pass back-to-work legislation.
Metro Transit is a monopoly, and the union should not be using their position at the only people who can provide that service as a means to extract more concessions out of taxpayers.
We have all heard Premier Dexter say that the province will not get involved in the dispute between public transit workers and Metro Transit. However, we believe if the democratically elected city council passes a motion, that politically and morally the provincial government has the responsibility to step up to the task.
Last year in Toronto, public transit workers were declared an essential service and denied the option to strike after the elected city council asked the labour friendly McGuinty government to pass essential service legislation. We are asking for a similar process here.
This proposal is not about choosing sides in the dispute. Put simply, public services that are paid for by taxpayers should be available to them and they should not be deprived of those services as a bargaining tactic.
I hope that with this letter, we can start a debate about how best to move forward. We urge you to consider asking the province to pass back to work legislation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter,
Kevin Lacey

Don't blame Mayor Kelly for
Don't blame Mayor Kelly for this mess. Blame the spoiled transit workers who want to be able to pick their own shifts. Guess what? No other line of work gets to do that. Even transit workers in other cities don't get to do that. Being a bus driver or ferry pilot is not rocket science and new people could be trained in short order.
They should be happy that they have a job. Many of us don't get the chance at steady employment, and then with the workers pulling this strike crap even when we get leads on a new job we can't get to it because of their selfishness.
They need to be legislated back to work. Their punishment should be no raise at all, they lose their right to pick shifts according to their preference, and the knowledge that the public will not stand for their selfishness. Better yet, let them be fired, paid a settlement from the city for early termination, and then let them try to get another job somewhere in HRM so they can see what a good life they already had.
enough, people are losig
enough, people are losig their jobs, and unable to pay bills, what do you think that is doing for the economy Mr Mayor, pure foolishness. This should be a essential service.

Seriously!! this has gone on
Seriously!! this has gone on enough!
I know several students who have missed days and days of classes because they simply don't have the cash to spend on a cab, to get to and from work/school EVERYDAY!!!!!!
I don't know a single person who gets to decide what their schedule for work looks like. Who the hell do these drivers think they are kidding? I for one will NEVER treat them with respect at all once they get running again. I think everyone should start up a new bus service in the HRM. Then once the greedy, selfish bastards decide to go back to work, the public with protest, and not use metro transit again. This is a complete outrage. I wish these posts were read aloud to the employees of metro transit so they all can know how big of a piece of SH*T they all are. Get over this petty 'rostering' bullsh*t and go back to work.

I am a senior citizen - but
I am a senior citizen - but guess what ??? WE ALL VOTE TOO!!!! So perhaps next week when our checks come in Mayor Kelly would like to pick us up and help us by giving us a drive to get groceries, pay bills and do our normal errands that we would be doing IF THE BUSES were running. I can understand both sides of this problem, but it seems to me that the fault lies in the Mayors hands and that of city council. Of course, many and perhaps none of the local government officials have ever relied on a bus, not like us poor voting citizens. We won't need an arbitrator next time we vote - we just say no.
