Ummm What Were You Saying Winnipeg Police Service?

In today's Winnipeg Free Press the Winnipeg Police Service appeared to do a bit of doublespeak.

You see, they suggested that mobile photo radar units have been appearing at the Grant Ave. and Nathaniel St. location "since 2003."

However, Wise-up Winnipeg (our city's citizen experts when it comes to photo radar) received a response to an information request from the Winnipeg Police Service this past June that includes a list of all mobile photo radar locations in Winnipeg. Go figure, there's no Grant and Nathaniel location on the list! Click here to see the police's response to Wise-up Winnipeg for yourself.

Further, Todd Dube from Wise-up Winnipeg went to the place where the photo radar vehicle has been parking on Grant today and knocked on apartment doors beside it. He spoke with four residents of the building and they all said the same thing - the vehicle just started parking there within the past couple months.

Think about it rationally for a second. If the vehicle has been parking there since 2003, why on earth would 500+ taxpayers suddenly be up in arms about tickets from that location now? The answer likely lies in the theory that the new location's sharp angle for measuring motorists is contributing to inaccurate readings, thus spitting tickets out with inflated speeds.

One thing is for certain, the police department needs to be accountable for their mistake and immediately issue a correction to local media.
