Taking aim at Harper-led deficit spending

Did the devil make him do it? Did the NDP-Liberal-Bloc coalition? Did Flaherty run renegade? Or does Stephen Harper independently and objectively think that deficit budgets really are the way to go?

These questions matter on many levels, but from a taxpayer advocacy perspective, only so much. Yes, a worldwide recession plus the Conservative government's minority status are both mitigating factors in Harper's defense. But when it comes to deficit budgets, it's better to doubt the benefit than to give the benefit of the doubt. Canadians need to demonstrate to both the government and the opposition that half a trillion dollars of debt is bad enough without digging even deeper.

A California political video recently questioned whether a certain candidate was a Fiscal Conservative In Name Only (FCINO). It soon went viral and got hundreds of thousands of views in a few days. From there, it was only natural to spoof Harper who has been called the same thing and by more than one observer. Yes, many fiscal conservatives have rightfully (yes, pun intended) wondered why it was that the Chretien-Martin regime could eliminate the deficit for 11 years, and it is the Harper regime that could undo all that progress.

So, without further adieu, here's the spoof...and by the way, it's already making waves.

Canada's Federal Debt

The federal government is adding $88 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out this year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.
