Who should determine Alberta MLA pay?

Alberta Director Scott Hennig discusses the pay, benefits and pensions of Alberta MLAs. In particular, he focusses on the transitional allowance for defeated and retiring MLAs. They receive 3 months salary for every year served, based on their three best years of service. Retiring MLAs such as Ken Kowalski received $1.3 million under this allowance and former premier Ed Stelmach $1 million. Scott adds that under the current rules MLAs set their own pay and benefits and this should be changed as it is a conflict of interest.
