Alberta spends $14 M on Olympics

A train, special venues for the torch relay, and Olympic perks for MLAs are part of $14 million in Olympic spending for Alberta. CTF Alberta Director Scott Hennig says the Alberta advantage did not come about by making billboards. More from CTV Calgary.

14 million ????

We spend 14 million dollars on the olympics and I live in a county where I cannot get my road graded properly in the summer or the winter???? I live in Thorhild county Ab and have had to call to complain about the road conditions several times a year foor the last several years and nothing has changed. My wife and I pay over fifty thousand dollars a year in taxes and our county only grades one half of the road at a time. I don't want my taxes going for olyimpics, bank bail outs, cultural programs or anything else until I recieve the services that are needed by all Canadians like roads, health care, education, fire, ambulance and police etc.......I can't believe how badly the tax payers are being screwed.

No work for some, due to Olympics

I am not against Olympics in a healthy economy, but when the homeless are bussed from Vancouver out to places like Chilliwack without any apparent plans in place for them, enough is enough.  Some offices have closed for the Olympics and that means that there is no work for staff.  If they are fortunate, they will get some financial compensation (not sure what though).  Many jobs are now contracted out or contracted overseas putting people out of work.  Colleges are still educating people, but often upon graduation, students are saddled with student loan debt and cannot find work with pay commensurate with their level of education.  This is especially true in rural British Columbia.  (I can only speak for the province where I live).

I have heard all the justifications for these social problems for example, "not all homeless are actually homeless, some are just faking it".  The truth is many of these people are menally ill or had no stable homelife as children etc and although there are forms of "helpful agencies" many of these agencies are woefully inadequate.  Food banks are often only open once weekly and people are not allowed to get anything there more often than once a month.  I know this is true, because my husband worked tirelessly to raise funds for charities and my sister has had to go to food banks to survive (she is disabled).

Outrageous!!!!

I am so tired of paying for them to have fun! I see my husband 4 days a month just so they can play. The average family is fighting to stay afloat and they get to go to the Olympics. They tell us what our debt should be and yet don't listen to the people they are getting their money from - we need a change!!

dept??

i dont understand why the federal government is so much in dept. i might not know all the facts behind the depts or know how the government plays with the tax money but i find they are setting a bad example towards all of the canadiens. i see them spending money without thought... we are so badly in dept i dont know how we will get out of it. i dont want to live in a country that wont be able to support it self. i love my country and it makes me sad to see that our leaders arent doing anything to reduce our dept. before we go spend money on making things better in our country why not put more effort in getting rid of the dept and once its gone imagine how much better we could have it. we are getting more in dept everyday.. why?? our leaders need to talk to some finacial advisors and take immediate action before its to late.

thank you for listening,
